November 17, 2021: A viral video of Actor-Comedian Vir Das invited controversy over a monologue he delivered as a part of his performance in the United States at John F Kennedy Center in Washington DC. The Comedian recently uploaded a video titled ‘I come from two Indias’ on the social networking sites. In the impugned video, Das talks about some of the topical issues India is confronting right now, including Covid-19, rape cases, the sclampdown against comedians and farmers’ protests.
The said monologue received tremendous backlash and now a complaint has been filed against Vir Das at Tilak Marg Police Station. The complaint is pertaining to the video clip in which he is allegedly using derogatory language against the nation during an event in the States. After Maharashtra BJP legal adviser Ashutosh J Dubey filed a complaint in Mumbai, a Delhi BJP member has filed the complaint for Das’s comment, “In India, we worship women in the day and rape them at night.”
Aditya Jha, who lodged the complaint in the New Delhi district on the night of 16th November 2021 said, “These derogatory statements against women and India are inflammatory. They were made in the US and malign the image of our country internationally. I want police to conduct an investigation.”
The Comedian, in his response to the reactions to the video, released a statement – “The video is a satire about the duality of two very separate India’s that do different things. Like any nation has light and dark, good and evil within it. None of this is a secret…”
As per the Senior police officers, no FIR has been registered yet.
